Three ways to give to The Playmakers

Our after-school and Summer Academy leadership programs teach character skills by applying values such as doing the right thing when no one is looking and working together as a team.

You can be a part of changing lives with a donation or by volunteering.

The Playmakers is so grateful for the blessings that have allowed us to continue our mission to help kids in under-served communities.

help the playmakers

Dear Friends of Playmakers:
It has been a busy year and we want to update you on the growth of our program. 2017 has brought us many blessings, and we are proud of the accomplishments that are allowing us to fulfill our mission of affecting young lives through Academics, Character & Leadership and Fitness.

  • Summer Camp at Oak Hills Church.
  • 10-12 trained Coaches mentoring our students.
  • 100 students currently being served during the school year; additional students are served at our Summer Academies.
  • Increased support from local Civic Groups: We could not do what we do without the fine Rotarians, Optimists and Lions in our community.
  • Development of a formal curriculum.

Touching stories from school staff and parents, of changes they have seen in the classroom and at home, are filling our hearts with pride. We don’t call ourselves an anti-bullying program – but we are changing the mindset of young people, coaching them to increase their self-confidence to overcome daily challenges. The acts of kindness stories we are witnessing and hearing tells us our program is touching young lives and The Playmakers pay-it-forward culture is spreading.

As our program evolves, we believe that we are positioned to accelerate our services to many more kids in our area. We are asking for your help which can truly make a difference to the young Playmaker you sponsor. Here are some examples of what your money can buy over the course of one year.

  • $15.00/month: Sponsor classroom materials for our academics portion of the program
  • $25.00/month: Sponsor field trip transportation
  • $35.00/month: Sponsor two young Playmakers
  • $50.00/month: Sponsor the expansion of services to a fifth elementary school in 2018

We are looking for caring people who would like to make a difference. Contact Coach Roz at 916-220-1284 or ThePlaymakers.org, or download our donation form here.

May you have a Merry Holiday and a Blessed New Year!

Thank you to all the Rotary Clubs that help us reach more students

Thank you to our local Rotary Clubs

Rotarians in the Sacramento region are changing young lives in disadvantaged communities.

Mike Daly, with the Rotary Club of Rancho Cordova-Sunrise has been involved with our program for the last 5 years. They were one of the first Rotary Clubs to sign on and sponsor our program on a local campus. We now have involvement with almost a dozen civic clubs in the area who are supporting our program in one way or another. Words are not enough to express our gratitude, we are building the next generation of Rotary.

Mike tells us, “You are taking an element of society, of culture, children who are underachieving in reading and struggling with learning, and you bring them to a place of confidence of achievement. And then through the character component when they come out, they learn the issue of conflict resolution, and they’re more confident in themselves, take on more challenges and it just seems that overall they get to be a more well-rounded, a more competent person. How does this help the community? You have less trouble in schools, less trouble in communities, and in families because they are learning to deal with issues in a better way.”

Coach Roz featured in Daily Word

Coaching in the Inner City

This article was published last month in Daily Word, A Faith-based website of resources and Daily Inspiration by Unity. Coach Roz speaks about his coaching experiences and his passion for helping lost kids.

When I started coaching high school football in one of Sacramento’s roughest areas, I didn’t know some of these kids had no place to live or that they didn’t know where their next meal was coming from. Many had never known their father. They all wanted to play football, even though their school hadn’t won a game in three years. It was a big assignment, but I wanted them to have a male role model in their life who truly cared about them. The football team became “family” for them and they found a sense of belonging and safety.

Many of the boys were failing academically, so I started an early-morning tutoring program. Initially, we were just helping them catch up on their homework. It didn’t take long to find out that they were failing because they couldn’t read. We switched our focus to reading and getting them caught up in the foundational pieces necessary for them to pass their subjects.

We wanted to provide ongoing support and encouragement for kids who had been given such a tough start in life, so Playmakers Mentoring Foundation was born. Through Playmakers, we promote character and leadership to disadvantaged and at-risk kids using football as the conduit. For many of these kids, our program became a lifeline.

You have to be willing to meet the kids where they are. That means going to difficult neighborhoods and broken homes and being comfortable developing relationships with the kids and their families, just as Jesus would. We try to model Jesus by how we carry ourselves, how we live our lives, and how we interact with kids. That’s what being a Playmaker is all about.

4 ways you can support The Playmakers Organization

Big Day of Giving

On May 4, 2017, The Playmakers will join non-profits all over the region in Big Day of Giving 2017. Please consider a modest donation to help us match a 21,000 pledge from local Optimist and Rotary groups.

On-going funding is vital to keep our programs running. From our trained coaches and Let’s Go Learn software licensing, to t-shirts and field trips for each young Playmaker. We are providing tools and support to make a difference in the lives of lost kids, and giving them the power to change their lives.
Since the beginning of Playmakers, our core mission has not changed. Coach Roz believes that  in every generation, we desperately need youth of character who are built to serve others. Every youth we can affect will certainly be a Playmaker for life.

Direct Donation

We are incredibly grateful to the Civic Groups and other donors who support our programs. With the help of individual volunteers, community partners and businesses that support us monetarily, we are helping students accelerate their reading skills and rewarding them for demonstrating exceptional character and leadership. You can show your support by donating directly through pay pal with the button below.

April 30 – Dinner with Playmakers

Tri Tip Dinner 2016, The PlaymakersAt the end of April, The Playmakers Organization will be hosting a Tri Tip Dinner at Divine Savior Church in Orangevale.

The festivities kick-off at 6:00pm. There will be stations where you can learn more about what our students are doing after-school four days a week, and you can meet the coaches who mentor them.

Also in attendance will be our sponsors, supporters and friends who together have helped us grow our After-School Literacy Program to 4 schools in the Sacramento area and a new location in Omaha, NE.

We have confirmed two featured speakers: Harrison Phillips and Jody Sears. Harrison Phillips is mentoring students in California when he is attending Stanford, and in Omaha on his school breaks. Jody Sears is the Sac State Hornets Head Coach, and he is supporting his team players who have chosen to work as a coach with our Lil’ Pups.

Thank You Playmaker Volunteers

Playmaker volunteers Joe Bodnar, Chip Schumacher, Patrick Gallagher, A.J. Dodd and Wally Borland —  You guys are just the best.

We had 25 kids at the Sac State Game on Saturday, Ocotber 24 and the kids had a blast. They got a limo-van ride to the game with their chaperones A.J, Joe, and Chip. Wally had a tailgate feast ready for them, and Patrick got the kids on the field to see the players close-up. What a memory for the kids. Our fraternity instructors did a tremendous job too.

I stopped by the limo service to make sure everything went well and they said they were just getting ready to call me because both drivers were so impressed on the great behavior of the kids. That is what being a Playmaker is all about. Thank you guys for making it a great event for the kids.

If you would like to experience the kids’ contagious excitement, contact us for an upcoming volunteer opportunity. We are taking kids to the trampoline place as a reward for reading.
