Derek Leathers, an Uncommon Man

playmaker Derek LeathersDerek Leathers is a Playmaker on several fields. He is a special guy on so many levels.

  • First and foremost, he is a great father and husband. He is a success story in itself in he has educated himself with a degree from Princeton with a football scholarship.
  • He gives back in so many ways, including coaching youth football in Nebraska.
  • He founded a non-profit called PlaySmart reaching at risk kids in several cities across the country.
  • In his spare time, he is the CEO of Werner Enterprises, and travels a gillion miles per year.
  • Finally, he is a Playmaker supporter as he believes that character, reading and the development of our youth is a non-negotiable.

Derek is an “uncommon man” whom I am proud to call a friend and coach. His actions advise us on how to grow and impact more kids across the country.

Reading & Sports Program Update

Playmakers has kicked off its after school reading/sports program and the kids are doing tremendously well.
Coach Komar has had the students’ reading assessed, and individualized programs are now prepared for each student. Our goal is a jump in reading levels (beyond normal fall progressions) during the fall semester.
SANYO DIGITAL CAMERAOur Sac State students are doing an outstanding job as instructors and our trained volunteers are making the classroom and sports activities a great experience.  We are using Sac State fraternity members who are serving in the community and mentoring kids s they want to make a positive contribution in the community.
Our programs now have a “waiting list” for kids wanting to participate in the next class and we will be adding schools in the winter semester is well. Stay tuned for updates!
