What it means to sponsor a Playmaker

Kristen Garl is adopting some Lil’ Pups

sponsor a playmaker lil pupRunning her campaign for Carmichael Honorary Mayor means fundraising. The Carmichael Chamber of Commerce is the primary organization to receive the funds raised, and Kristen chose The Playmakers as the Non-Profit who will share in a portion of the money raised.

Thank you Kristen, for paying it forward and sponsoring our Lil’ Pups. You are a true Playmaker, a person of outstanding character doing the right thing for your community. We wish you the best of luck in your campaign!

These funds will help us make a difference in a few kid’s lives. A big difference.

When you donate to Playmakers programs, you help change the lives of kids who may be lost and overlooked at home. The Playmakers Character and Leadership Academy has three core components to empower young persons with tools to overcome life’s challenges and change their perspective on their future.

A little more about Kristen and her Carmichael Honorary Mayor campaign

Express hope. Create dreams.
My name is Kristen Garl. I am humbled and honored to be running for Honorary Mayor of Carmichael. My goal is to express hope and create dreams among the youth, residents, businesses, and visitors of Carmichael by supporting decisions that positively impact the community.

Why Carmichael? Although I am not a resident, I am a businesswoman supporting Carmichael. As General Manager of Express Employment Professionals – Northeast Sacramento office, our territory encompasses Carmichael. Each day, I interact with job seekers, businesses, schools and services that impact Carmichael’s economy. Specifically, I enjoy volunteering as Principal of the Day and teaching employment readiness topics within San Juan Unified School District. My office was recognized as a Most Valued Partner by San Juan Unified School District in June 2018.    Beyond our standard process, I am strategically working on a proposal to connect local employers with SJUSD  Career Technical Education (CTE) graduates to overcome a portion of the trade skills gap in the NE Sacramento  area.

Thank you to all the Rotary Clubs that help us reach more students

Thank you to our local Rotary Clubs

Rotarians in the Sacramento region are changing young lives in disadvantaged communities.

Mike Daly, with the Rotary Club of Rancho Cordova-Sunrise has been involved with our program for the last 5 years. They were one of the first Rotary Clubs to sign on and sponsor our program on a local campus. We now have involvement with almost a dozen civic clubs in the area who are supporting our program in one way or another. Words are not enough to express our gratitude, we are building the next generation of Rotary.

Mike tells us, “You are taking an element of society, of culture, children who are underachieving in reading and struggling with learning, and you bring them to a place of confidence of achievement. And then through the character component when they come out, they learn the issue of conflict resolution, and they’re more confident in themselves, take on more challenges and it just seems that overall they get to be a more well-rounded, a more competent person. How does this help the community? You have less trouble in schools, less trouble in communities, and in families because they are learning to deal with issues in a better way.”

Playmakers Summer Academy Wrap Up!

Our time with the students during the summer is rewarding  –  to see how we are making a difference in the everyday lives of the children we serve.

The 2017 Playmakers Folsom Character & Leadership Summer Academy. Thank you Rotary Club of Folsom, we built some amazing relationships this summer with the kids. We couldn’t have done it without your help, Thank You!

On our final day, The Playmaker student-athletes enjoyed a delicious lunch of Chicago Fire Pizza, who we give many thanks for donating funds and pizza this summer for a great group of kids. Looking forward to next summer!  #characterfirst #payitforward #TeamMeansFamily #chificommunity

Why Civic Groups are important to Playmakers

One of our missions is to teach the pay it forward philosophy of volunteering to the next generation. We want to instill a pride in serving community, and being a contributing team member.

optimist volunteers

We would like to express our heart-felt thank you to each service club that has shown support for The Playmakers through the years.

The Optimists and Rotarians that support our mission are allowing us to help give disadvantaged youth the power to change their world. Through leadership and character-building exercises, we are seeing a difference in kids who have had a history of behavior issues and a lack of focus. The students are responding with heartwarming acts of kindness that are making a difference in the mindset of the campus.

We invite you to visit our program so you can see in person how the coaches at our Playmakers Academy are building positivity into the Lil’ Pups they supervise.

The Sacramento region has more non-profits thank any other city on the west coast. We appreciate you may have many causes close to your heart. For Big Day of Giving 2017, would you be able to commit to our minimum $15 level?  Our goal is that every single dollar will be matched by one or more of the Optimist and Rotary supporters.

4 ways you can support The Playmakers Organization

Big Day of Giving

On May 4, 2017, The Playmakers will join non-profits all over the region in Big Day of Giving 2017. Please consider a modest donation to help us match a 21,000 pledge from local Optimist and Rotary groups.

On-going funding is vital to keep our programs running. From our trained coaches and Let’s Go Learn software licensing, to t-shirts and field trips for each young Playmaker. We are providing tools and support to make a difference in the lives of lost kids, and giving them the power to change their lives.
Since the beginning of Playmakers, our core mission has not changed. Coach Roz believes that  in every generation, we desperately need youth of character who are built to serve others. Every youth we can affect will certainly be a Playmaker for life.

Direct Donation

We are incredibly grateful to the Civic Groups and other donors who support our programs. With the help of individual volunteers, community partners and businesses that support us monetarily, we are helping students accelerate their reading skills and rewarding them for demonstrating exceptional character and leadership. You can show your support by donating directly through pay pal with the button below.

Derek Leathers, an Uncommon Man

playmaker Derek LeathersDerek Leathers is a Playmaker on several fields. He is a special guy on so many levels.

  • First and foremost, he is a great father and husband. He is a success story in itself in he has educated himself with a degree from Princeton with a football scholarship.
  • He gives back in so many ways, including coaching youth football in Nebraska.
  • He founded a non-profit called PlaySmart reaching at risk kids in several cities across the country.
  • In his spare time, he is the CEO of Werner Enterprises, and travels a gillion miles per year.
  • Finally, he is a Playmaker supporter as he believes that character, reading and the development of our youth is a non-negotiable.

Derek is an “uncommon man” whom I am proud to call a friend and coach. His actions advise us on how to grow and impact more kids across the country.

Sponsor Olsen-Fielding has started a trend

Olsen-Fielding Early Adaptors

The day that Curt Olsen came to our campus and saw kids sitting on the floor learning to read was all it took. Playmakers had just researched a cloud based reading program that required software and chrome books but did not have the financial resources to launch the beta test.  Our goal was to improve kids reading grade levels (in a volunteer program) during the summer. LOFTY GOAL!!

Curt Olsen committed the funding to kick off the summer reading program that yielded the data that proved kids can and will learn to read over the summer. With that data, Playmakers has secured a grant from the City of Rancho Cordova funding 3 more schools for 12 months.  This means 100+ at risk kids reading and involved in sports and exercise.

This reading lab (along with Curt) was showcased to Jim McGrann (Global CEO of Vision Service Plan) and Jim saw the vision and results of Playmakers and corporate involvement. Curt Olsen (and the team at Olsen-Felding) jump started Playmakers after-school program.

We are proud to partner with Curt and Olsen-Fielding as they are assisting us in creating “uncommon youth.”
