Overcoming the achievement gap at local elementary schools

Our goals include helping students overcome and avoid

falling into the achievement gap.

As an example, the achievement gap happens when a student in 6th grade is still at a 4th grade reading level. Low income students can easily fall into this gap as early as first grade if they don’t have the opportunity to attend Preschool or Kindergarten. If life at home is stressed and unpredictable, it is hard to focus on learning and improving yourself. The Playmakers Academy enrolls students in 4th-6th grade, and our goal is not just to help them with their reading – but to build their focus, self-confidence and social skills. We are grooming them for a life of opportunity – where they can determine their future.

  • Learning software with trained coaches assisting
  • Tracking achievement
  • Building future leaders with character development
  • Sports and recreation activities

The Playmakers Character and Leadership Academy is making a difference in the lives of our students. They are building their self-confidence, learning to play well with others and increasing their grade level reading skills. Students participate more in the classroom, and we are starting to hear many positive Playmaker Stories which fill our hearts with pride. Our Lil’ Pups are making a difference in their own lives and in their community.

This video does a great job explaining the achievement gap.
